Why would a thirty-year-old poet in twenty-first-century mid-America choose, as his main characters, British literary personae from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries? The answer is that Christian Anton Gerard is truly extraordinary, a scholar in love with jazz and John Bull. His debut collection, Wilmot Here, Collect for Stella, has the most original, unforgettable title of any poetry book published in years. It suggests that an old-fashioned collect call can provide the only-connect closeness scarcely found in conversations on smartphones.Wilmot and Stella’s conversation antedates Alexander Graham Bell and spans centuries. It links the hotheaded Second Earl of Rochester and Sir Philip Sidney’s femme fatale in a time warp that suspends disbelief in the twinkling of a star—or, to translate “star” back into Latin, “Stella.” The interaction of these two lovers would be enough to win Gerard special praise. But this poet goes beyond his anglophile sources and offers a mini-anthology of love poems between a married couple alive and well in today’s American heartland. The colloquy between lovers may call up echoes of Wilmot and Stella, but it is rooted in such rhetorical questions as “Do you even remember our wedding? / My hips clapping against yours later // all those years ago, that New Jack City? / Your father looking at his son-in-law?”
Gerard revels in such backyard verities as “the wind thick / with children yelling, pickup basketball / next door, the boys saying the girls / should lead cheers.” He summons his grandfather’s ghost: “I hear you open our past // like a banjo. Whistle a tune so I can know / how to carry your name.” One of his most endearing eccentricities is his fetish for women’s elbows. Some of his poems are hilarious. Over all this is a superb beginning for a poet whose accomplishments suggest vast promise.
Here’s Gerard’s shortest poem FYI:
Wilmot Here, Collect for Stella; or Goodnight
On sateen sheets you lie—
a trumpet, pearl-tipped
valve tops. Tomorrow I hope
we’ll figure out some bebop.

Wilmot Here Collect for Stella Christian Anton Gerard 9781625490773 Books Reviews
This book is heartfelt and intricate. It reminds me so much of my relationship with my husband. All the trials, all the love, all the funny things... somehow Gerard brings them all forward. The nods to poets of yesteryear are a bonus for scholars. The essentials are all there. It's totally relatable and brought me to laughing and tears. Thank you, Christian Anton Gerard! There is something here for everyone that has ever felt any sort of love.
