Jess Tate is trying to make a life for herself and her teenage son after her husband's sudden death. Running the family’s struggling landscape business in Northern Michigan has been hard work, and her son hasn’t been much help. She’s managed to get by, learning to run the big equipment herself, but between snowplowing early in the mornings and working her daytime job in town, she often wonders if there will ever be more to life than endless work.

Talented ice sculptor Jake Thompson had fame and fortune in St. Louis, but he’s been forced to start over after a disastrous relationship left him embittered and deeply in debt. His sister’s remote vacation home in Northern Michigan is the ideal retreat to lick his wounds and rebuild his career in peace and quiet—except a certain feisty redhead and her teenage son have a penchant for disturbing his solitude.

In the snowy winter, Jake and Jess unexpectedly find their lives and attitudes begin to change. Will family involvements and ghosts from the past keep them apart, or are they strong enough to risk rising from the ashes of their lives like the mythical phoenix?

The Christmas Phoenix edition by Patricia Kiyono Literature Fiction eBooks

Jess won't give up. Being a widowed mother is anything but easy. Between running a snowplowing business and working as a waitress at a second job, her life is beyond full and exhausting. Add a fourteen year old boy who needs constant reminding of everything and you get a mom falling asleep at the dinner table. She needs someone to rise up and help her collect the ashes in life and start new.

Jake needs to start over. Using his sister's Summer Vacation home for the winter he is using this time to build up his ice scupting business from the ground up. His old wound from Iraq is not as serious as the wounds in his heart from betrayal and self-imposed guilt. Jake needs someone to ignite the fire in his heart and burn away all the hurt.

Add a dog who needs a boy's touch, a huge snowstorm, some hot meals from a friendly neighbor and you have yourself a great Christmas story that warms you up like hot chocolate. "The Christmas Phoenix" is a delightful story that is relatable and believable. Ms. Kyiono does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life and adding some great allegorical elements to her story. I highly recommend this book!

Patricia has a way of creating realistic, diverse characters who find their way through believable scenarios. This heartwarming, touching tale is of an injured Iraqi veteran turned sculpture artist and a single mom who owns a plowing business in Michigan. I highly recommend you read this short story of how they twine together. Way to go, Patricia!
Patricia Kiyono has a gift for taking you into the story and making you feel like you are right there watching the characters in person! This is a wonderful story about loss, love and family values. Jess is a strong, hardworking widow trying to do the best for her teenage son. Rory lets his mother do everything for him until he meets Jake, their new neighbor who has his own ghosts to deal with. The author builds a wonderful story around these three characters, teaching us that we all need help now and then. It is an enjoyable Christmas "treat"!
The Christmas Phoenix is a sweet, straight-forward story which progresses smoothly, making it relaxing and enjoyable.

The characters Jess, an overworked widowed mother of a teenage boy, Rory (who wants to help her sout but isn't quite sure how to go about it) and Jake, a veteren wounded in Iraq, who has moved to Michigan to start a new life after being put out of business by a con-woman in St. Louis. Jake hates to ask for help. Jess tends to overextend herself with help.

I loved the recurring symbolism of the phoenix, representing a second chance at life for all of them.

Great way to spend an evening.
The Christmas Phoenix resurrects hope for two people who have insulated themselves from further hurt. Jake is nursing old wounds, physical and emotional, from Iraq, and has taken up residence in northern Michigan to revive his ice sculpting business. He wants to be alone while he sorts out his life, but he's drawn into the life of his neighbor and her son.
Jess, a widow, struggles to raise her son by working two jobs, including the lawn and snow plowing business her late husband started. The new neighbor is a distraction she doesn't need.
I like the strength of Ms. Kiyono's characters. Jess works hard to provide for her son, but draws the line at compromising her principals. She's protective but realizes she has to allow him to grow. In the beginning! Jake is stubbornly a stand alone kind of guy, but he changes when he sees how hard it is for her. He and Jess tentatively help each other and find healing in the process.
If you're looking for hot and steamy love scenes, go elsewhere, but if you want a love story that's warm and genuine, buy this book!

Review

"The Christmas Phoenix" by Patricia Kiyono was a really good Christmas story in one finding new beginning. This was a real quick short story but really well written novel. Jess's life was one of being a single parent after the death of her husband with a fourteen year old son. Did she have her chores....working two jobs, putting food on the table but most of all being there for her son. It was not a good time for Jess and something good happens and that is Jake Thompson, a ice sculpturer... moves in the neighborhood. He was definitely in the need of healing..recovering from a disastrous relationship and war in Iraq. Jake was now living in his sister's vacation summer home during the winter. Upon there meeting and getting to know each other .... will (Jess and Jake) come together in "The Christmas Phoenix" and be able to start a new life together? Truly, Jess needed someone to help start a new life with and Jake needed someone to "ignite the fire in his heart and burn away all the hurt."

The characters were really fulled with a lot of strength...Jess working very heard providing for her son and Jake trying to stand alone but soon..."he changes when he see how hard it is for Jess and I don't want to leave out the dog who just needed extra love from the boy. Now, this is where I say you must pick up this good read to see just what "The Christmas
Phoenix" is all about..... Definitely this was a second chance for Jess and Jake. Get ready for a genuine good read.

Be ready for a very a loving novel with interesting details that I would recommend as a good short read. I also found the book cover is really beautiful piece of art to look at too.
